The Nigeria Premier Football League is on a scheduled two-week hiatus as the Nigeria Football Federation completes FA Cup fixtures across the country. When competitive action resumes in the first week of May at Matchday 36, the league’s most compelling title race in recent years will enter its decisive phase.
Enugu Rangers currently sit at the summit, leading by a single point, though their advantage is far from secure. Five clubs are separated by just five points across the top of the standings, with continental qualification, the championship title, and top-flight survival all still mathematically unresolved. According to the official NPFL Twitter account, Rangers, Rivers United, Ikorodu City, Abia Warriors, and Shooting Stars all remain in contention for the title heading into the final three matchweeks.
Enugu Rangers carry one notable statistical advantage into the run-in: they are unbeaten at home this season. Their final fixture of the campaign on Matchday 38, however, is at home against third-placed Ikorodu City — a match that could serve as the definitive title decider should the points gap remain narrow.
Ikorodu City’s presence in the title conversation represents one of the standout narratives of the season. The club is only in their second NPFL campaign, yet the Oga Boys find themselves in genuine contention for a continental berth. Their top scorer, Joseph Arumala, has netted 12 goals this season — the joint-most in the club’s short NPFL history — and currently leads the league’s scoring charts. For a side that only recently earned promotion, competing for Africa at the end of a second top-flight season would be a remarkable achievement.
While the title race commands the most attention, the situation at the foot of the table is equally fraught. Five clubs are separated by just three points in the relegation zone, with only nine points still available across the remaining fixtures. Warri Wolves sit 16th on 43 points, occupying the final relegation place despite being level on points with Remo Stars, Enyimba, and Niger Tornadoes above them. Goal difference alone separates those clubs from safety.
Kun Khalifat FC (18th, 40 points) and Bayelsa United (19th, 40 points) face even more precarious positions. Bayelsa, level with Kun Khalifat and Wikki Tourist below them, will require positive results elsewhere in addition to winning their own remaining matches.
Perhaps most notable among the clubs in danger are Remo Stars and Enyimba. Remo Stars, the reigning NPFL champions, are sitting 15th on 43 points — uncomfortably close to the relegation places. Enyimba, Nigeria’s most decorated club with a record eight league titles and two CAF Champions League crowns, are 13th on 43 points. Both clubs will need to accumulate points across their final three fixtures to guarantee safety, with any further dropped points risking a slide into genuinely dangerous territory.
The timing of the FA Cup break has added a psychological dimension to the final stretch. Title challengers gain time to recover physically and refine their tactical preparations. For clubs in or near the relegation zone, however, the fortnight offers little relief — only an extended period of uncertainty before competitive football resumes.
Matchday 36, scheduled for the first week of May, will set the tone for what promises to be a dramatic conclusion to the 2025/26 NPFL season.
