Nesta Elphege Denies Maduka Okoye Ninth Serie A Clean Sheet as Parma Beat Udinese 1-0

Parma claimed a vital 1-0 victory away at Udinese on Saturday, April 18, in Matchweek 33 of Serie A, with substitute Nesta Elphege scoring the only goal of the game just six minutes after coming off the bench to settle an otherwise tightly contested affair at the Bluenergy Stadium.

The result came as a considerable blow to Udinese and their Nigerian goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, who had been on course for a ninth Serie A clean sheet of the season. The 25-year-old had been instrumental in a defensive run that stretched beyond 300 consecutive minutes without conceding in the Italian top flight, a sequence that included a commanding 3-0 defeat of AC Milan the previous weekend. That remarkable streak was brought to an end in decisive fashion by a single moment of quality from the Cameroonian forward.

Elphege, introduced as a substitute, collected the ball just outside the Udinese penalty area, turned sharply with close control to get the better of two defenders, and found himself in a one-on-one situation with Okoye. Composed in the moment, the striker rolled a left-footed finish past the onrushing goalkeeper — a finish that gave Okoye no realistic chance of saving. PulseSports reported the goal was confirmed by Serie A’s official channels, with the league posting footage of the strike on social media.

Beyond the individual duel, the match was largely a disciplined, low-tempo contest. Referee Davide Di Marco had little to adjudicate in terms of controversy as both teams largely neutralised each other across 90 minutes. Udinese struggled to break down a Parma side that defended with structure and determination throughout.

For Parma, the significance of the three points cannot be overstated. Heading into the fixture, they had gone six matches without a win and sat 14th in the Serie A table with 39 points, uncomfortably close to the relegation zone. The victory also ended a seven-year wait for a win in Udine, with their previous success at the venue coming back in 2019. The club’s official social media channels reflected the relief, posting: “THREE MAJOR POINTS IN THE BAG — FORZAAAAAA PARMAAAAA” shortly after the final whistle.

Udinese, sitting 11th with 43 points, remain well clear of any immediate danger, but the manner of the defeat — undone by a substitute within minutes of his introduction — will prompt questions for their coaching staff ahead of the final stages of the campaign. The loss also brings an end to the momentum built through their recent defensive solidity.

Despite conceding on Saturday, Okoye’s Serie A season remains one that merits recognition. Eight clean sheets for a mid-table club represents a strong individual return, and the Nigerian international has established himself as one of the more dependable goalkeepers in the division this term. His performances have continued to fuel discussion around his role with the Super Eagles national team, with Okoye previously stating his ambition to represent Nigeria on a consistent international basis.

With Serie A heading into its final stretch, Parma’s victory could yet prove to be a defining moment in their survival bid, while Udinese will look to regroup and secure their top-half standing over the remaining matchweeks.
