Nigerian international Victor Osimhen is gradually becoming a cult hero in Naples following his impressive form for Serie A outfit Napoli.

The 23-year-old joined the Partenopeans from Ligue 1 side Lille in the summer of 2020 in a deal reported to be worth €50 million (£45m/$59m).

Osimhen has scored a total of 30 goals in all competitions since joining the club, including 18 goals last season.

He was in action as they welcomed English club Liverpool in their opening match of the UEFA Champions League and was brutal in the first half before he was substituted.

The Super Eagles striker hit the woodwork in the first three minutes of the game before Piotr Zielinski put the Italians ahead from the spot in the fifth minute.

Osimhen would miss a penalty in the 18th minute of the encounter as Alisson Becker went the right way to deny the Nigerian a Champions League goal.

The energetic striker tormented the Liverpool defence that he was brought down in the danger area by Virgil van Dijk, but he fluffed his chance.

Napoli went on to win the game 4-1 as Zambo Anguissa and Giovanni Simeone grabbed one each, while Zielinski completed the rout after he grabbed his second on the night to make Luis Diaz’s goal a mere consolation.

Nigerian journalist Oma Akatugba, at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in Napoli, shared the moment security officials and fans tried to take selfies with the striker.

They could be heard screaming 'Victor' Victor'.

A fan wrote in the comment section:

“Too much love I have got for Victor's humility, more heights bro.”

Is Jurgen Klopp under a seventh-season curse?

Sports Brief earlier reported that Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool was completely torn into shreds by a ruthless Napoli side, who put three past the Reds in the first half of their Champions League opener.

A rampant display from the Serie A outfit ensured the tie ended as a contest at halftime with a commanding three-nil lead before completing the rout with a fourth goal after recess.

The German trainer's empire at Anfield appears to be falling apart in his seventh year, a déjà vu, that has seen 55-year-old record diminishing returns in previous coaching stints with Dortmund and Mainz.
