Liam Rosenior has thrown his full support behind Moises Caicedo ahead of what promises to be a significant personal milestone for the Ecuador international, with the Chelsea manager backing the 24-year-old to play a decisive role against Manchester City this Sunday.

Caicedo is set to make his 100th Premier League appearance for Chelsea when the two sides meet at Stamford Bridge, a landmark occasion for a player who arrived at the club from Brighton in the summer of 2023 in a deal worth £115 million — a British transfer record at the time. In the two-and-a-half years since, the South American has established himself as a central figure in Chelsea’s midfield engine room.

“For me, he’s one of the best defensive midfield players, if not the best defensive midfield player in world football,” Rosenior said at his pre-match press conference. “Because of his intelligence, his physicality, his technical quality, how he understands the game. He’s going to be huge for us on Sunday.”

The confidence in Caicedo comes at a challenging period for Chelsea, who have managed just one victory in their last six Premier League matches. Despite that run of poor form, Rosenior is adamant the Blues possess the quality to compete with Pep Guardiola’s side.

“Of course we can [beat them], we’re a very good team,” the Chelsea head coach insisted. “We’ve gone through a difficult run, even though in that run we were punished for mistakes, there were good moments. When I actually analysed the games that we’ve had, we’ve caused every team we’ve played against problems but haven’t had the results for that.”

For Manchester City, Sunday’s trip to west London carries significant title implications. A victory at Stamford Bridge would reduce Arsenal’s lead at the top of the Premier League table to six points, with City also holding a game in hand over the Gunners.

Caicedo’s journey to becoming one of English football’s most highly valued midfielders has been swift. After breaking through at Brighton under successive managers, his move to Chelsea broke the British transfer fee record previously held by Jack Grealish’s £100 million switch to Manchester City in 2021. The defensive midfielder’s ability to win the ball, cover ground, and distribute efficiently has drawn widespread praise across European football.

Sunday’s match represents a pivotal fixture for both clubs. Chelsea will be seeking a result that can reignite momentum in the second half of their season, while Manchester City will look to maintain pressure on Arsenal at the summit of the table. With Caicedo approaching a century of Premier League appearances in Chelsea colours, Rosenior will be hoping the milestone occasion brings out the best in his midfield cornerstone.
