Barcelona’s UEFA Champions League campaign came to an end on Tuesday when Atlético Madrid eliminated them 3-2 on aggregate, despite the Catalans winning the second leg 2-1. The tie produced one of the most dramatic reversals of the quarter-final round, with Atlético overturning a 2-0 deficit in the second leg to seize the aggregate lead and advance to the next stage.
Nigerian international Ademola Lookman was central to Atlético’s turnaround, scoring the decisive goal that shifted momentum in Madrid’s favour after being set up by Marcos Llorente. The finish proved to be the turning point that ended Barcelona’s European ambitions for the season.
In the wake of the defeat, several Barcelona players and supporters directed criticism at the match officials, with winger Raphinha among the most vocal, describing the outcome as a robbery. Those complaints have since drawn a sharp rebuttal from former Nigeria captain John Mikel Obi, who offered his assessment to Mundo Deportivo.
“A lot of FC Barcelona fans won’t like what I’m about to say, but it’s the truth. You dominated the ball the entire game just to do absolutely nothing with it, and then you shout ‘robbery’ when reality hits you,” Mikel told the publication. “That wasn’t a robbery, that was you exposing yourselves by having all the possession and zero killer instinct to show for it.”
Mikel, who captained the Super Eagles and enjoyed a lengthy club career that included spells at Chelsea and Trabzonspor, did not limit his critique to Barcelona’s technical shortcomings. He also questioned the character shown by Hansi Flick’s side when the pressure mounted. “That ‘comeback mentality’ you love to talk about… where was it? Because when the game really needed character, Atletico Madrid had it,” he said.
The former midfielder drew a pointed contrast between Lookman’s decisive contribution and the conduct of Barcelona’s players after the final whistle. “Ademola Lookman stepped up and decided the match, while Barcelona players were busy shaking hands with the referee as if he was going to change the score for them,” Mikel said. “They failed to come back against Atlético on two different occasions when they had to play them twice. Now they want to blame the referee for their incompetent style of play. That’s not how it works.”
Mikel’s reference to two meetings between the sides is notable. Barcelona faced Atlético Madrid across both legs of the quarter-final and were unable to secure a positive aggregate result on either occasion across the tie’s duration, ultimately falling short when it mattered most.
Lookman’s impact on the tie adds to a growing body of significant performances from the Nigerian forward in European competition this season. The 27-year-old previously scored a hat-trick for Atalanta against Bayer Leverkusen in the 2024 UEFA Europa League final, cementing his reputation as a player capable of delivering in high-stakes knockout matches.
Atlético Madrid’s progression sets up a further challenge for another club with Nigerian connections. According to reports, Lookman is now poised to feature in a semi-final matchup that could pit Atlético against Arsenal, a tie that would see the forward face the club he left as a youth player. Barcelona’s elimination, meanwhile, leaves Flick’s side to reflect on a Champions League campaign that promised considerably more than it ultimately delivered.
