Lionel Messi did not hide his frustration after Inter Miami CF suffered one of the most damaging results of their MLS season, throwing away a 3-0 lead at home to Orlando City in the Florida Derby and losing 4-3 in a collapse that left the reigning MLS Cup holders fourth in the Eastern Conference standings.

Inter Miami had looked in complete control of the fixture, racing into a commanding three-goal advantage with Messi completing the scoring in the 33rd minute. What followed, however, was a stunning reversal. Martín Ojeda was the chief architect of Orlando City’s comeback, completing a hat-trick to level the contest before Tyrese Spicer struck in the 93rd minute to seal a winner that silenced the home crowd.

The defeat extended Inter Miami’s winless run at Nu Stadium to four matches in the current campaign — a concerning trend for a side expected to compete for another MLS title. At full-time, Messi stormed directly down the tunnel, visibly furious with what he had witnessed.

Defender Ian Fray confirmed that the captain addressed the squad firmly behind closed doors after the final whistle. “Our captain spoke, and obviously gave us a bunch of words,” Fray said. “He encouraged us for the next game and said this is unacceptable. We all agreed with him, it is unacceptable, and it won’t happen again for sure.”

Teammate Noah Allen was equally candid in his post-match assessment, acknowledging that the squad mentally switched off after establishing their three-goal cushion. Allen described the collective display as “very poor” — a rare public admission of a breakdown in concentration at the highest level of the competition.

The result highlights a troubling pattern for Inter Miami, whose defensive vulnerabilities have repeatedly undermined strong attacking performances. Despite Messi contributing eight goals in just 10 MLS appearances this season, the team’s inability to manage leads has placed their campaign under serious scrutiny. The Florida Derby defeat in particular will sting, given its local rivalry implications and the manner in which the game was lost.

Messi, who joined Inter Miami from Paris Saint-Germain in July 2023, has remained one of the most productive players in MLS since his arrival, but individual brilliance has increasingly struggled to compensate for structural weaknesses across the squad. Inter Miami won the 2024 Supporters’ Shield and secured the MLS Cup, but sustaining that level of performance into the following campaign has proven more difficult than anticipated.

With the MLS season still in its relatively early stages, Inter Miami have time to address the issues raised by Messi and respond accordingly. However, the winless home streak and the manner of this particular defeat will demand an immediate and convincing response in their upcoming fixtures.
