Mbappe’s Conversion Rate Crashes From 25% to 4%: The Stats Behind Real Madrid’s Season Collapse

Real Madrid’s 2025-26 season is unravelling on two fronts simultaneously, and a detailed statistical breakdown compiled by AS points squarely at a dramatic loss of form from Kylian Mbappe as a central factor in the club’s difficulties.

The numbers are stark. Mbappe’s shooting conversion rate stood at 25% as recently as February — a figure consistent with elite clinical finishing — but across his last seven appearances in all competitions, that figure has collapsed to just 4%. In practical terms, the France captain was previously converting roughly one in every four attempts on goal. He is now scoring approximately once every 25 shots.

The goal-per-minute data reinforces the same picture. Before the current slump, Mbappe was finding the net once every 70 minutes of football. That ratio has since deteriorated to one goal every 497 minutes — a sevenfold decline that reflects just how pronounced his drop in effectiveness has been.

Mbappe’s solitary goal during this seven-game drought came in Real Madrid’s 1-1 draw against Girona on Friday, April 10. That result continued a damaging run for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, who have now dropped points in three of their last five La Liga matches. Barcelona have capitalised fully, opening up a nine-point lead in the title race with only seven rounds of fixtures remaining in the season.

The contrast with Mbappe’s earlier form this campaign is considerable. The 26-year-old had been leading the Pichichi standings — La Liga’s top scorer award — with 23 goals, a tally that reflected the kind of output Real Madrid expected when they completed his long-anticipated transfer from Paris Saint-Germain ahead of the 2024-25 season. He is also the holder of a 2018 FIFA World Cup winner’s medal and has been among the most prolific forwards in European football over the past decade, making the current decline all the more notable.

The immediate priority for Real Madrid is the UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg against Bayern Munich. The German side hold a two-goal advantage from the first leg, meaning Madrid require a significant result to progress to the semi-finals. Mbappe’s ability to rediscover his finishing sharpness before that fixture will be a defining question for the club’s European campaign.

Beyond club football, France head coach Didier Deschamps will also be monitoring the situation closely. The 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to begin in June, and Mbappe — as the national team’s captain — will be expected to play a leading role. Whether his current form represents a temporary dip or a more persistent issue remains to be seen, but the timeline leaves limited room for a prolonged recovery.

Real Madrid’s season now hinges on two outcomes over the coming days: overturning the Bayern deficit to preserve their Champions League involvement, and hoping results elsewhere in La Liga allow them to remain within mathematical contention of Barcelona at the summit.
