Maurizio Sarri Calls Lazio’s 2025/26 Season ‘Devastating’ as Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s Club Future Hangs in Doubt

Lazio’s 2025/26 Serie A campaign has descended into crisis, with head coach Maurizio Sarri using stark language to describe a season derailed by injuries, inconsistency, and mounting tactical concerns — raising serious questions about the future of the club and Nigeria international Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.

The latest blow came in the form of a narrow 1-0 home defeat to Fiorentina, a result Sarri described as “frankly harsh” given his side’s control of large portions of the contest. A headed goal from Robin Gosens proved the decisive moment, while Fiorentina goalkeeper David De Gea produced crucial stops to deny both Mattia Zaccagni and Petar Ratkov from converting clear opportunities.

Despite the performance suggesting Lazio were the dominant side, the result compounded an already difficult period for the Roman club. Sarri acknowledged that vulnerability to counter-attacks had proven a recurring and costly weakness throughout the season, pointing also to the absence of a reliable centre-forward presence in the penalty area as a structural problem that has gone unresolved.

In his post-match assessment, Sarri went further, labelling the overall campaign “devastating” and attributing much of the damage to a persistent injury crisis that has repeatedly forced changes to team selection and disrupted any semblance of tactical continuity. The Italian tactician did not stop there — when asked about what comes next, Sarri offered a notably non-committal response. “We’ll see what the club has in mind,” he said, suggesting that decisions regarding both his tenure and broader squad planning will be deferred until the season concludes.

Lazio currently sit ninth in Serie A, a significant underperformance for a club that finished fifth in the 2024/25 season and had targeted a return to European football. The club’s struggles represent a sharp decline from their earlier promise under Sarri, whose tactical system — built on high pressing and positional play — has appeared increasingly ill-suited to a depleted and inconsistent squad.

For Super Eagles midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, the turbulent season adds further uncertainty to his situation at the Stadio Olimpico. The 23-year-old, who joined Lazio on a permanent basis following a loan spell, has been one of the brighter individual performers in an otherwise difficult campaign, but the club’s ninth-place standing and an unclear managerial picture could influence decisions over his long-term future at the club.

Despite the league disappointment, Lazio retain a route to silverware through the Coppa Italia, where they have a semi-final fixture still to play. The cup competition represents perhaps the most realistic opportunity for Sarri and his squad to salvage something meaningful from a season that has otherwise fallen well short of expectations.

Whether Sarri remains in charge beyond the current campaign remains an open question. His public comments hint strongly that a significant restructuring may be under consideration at the club, with the end of the season likely to trigger a broader review of personnel, coaching staff, and transfer strategy.
