Mason Mount has set his sights firmly on ending Manchester United’s long wait for a Premier League title, insisting the club possesses the quality and mentality required to compete for English football’s top honour as early as next season.

United last won the Premier League in 2013 — Sir Alex Ferguson’s final campaign in charge — a drought that has now stretched to 13 years. Mount, speaking with clear conviction, identified closing that gap as the squad’s foremost collective objective. “I’ve won the Champions League already, so I have a goal of winning the Premier League. Can we do that? Yes, I think we can,” the midfielder said.

While acknowledging that such ambitions may appear premature given the club’s recent struggles, the 27-year-old argued that elite mentality demands nothing less. “It may seem a little bit far away, but you must have that mentality to really push yourself as a group,” he added.

Mount joined United from Chelsea in the summer of 2023 in a deal reported to be worth around £60 million, but his time at Old Trafford has been disrupted by injuries and questions over his best position within the team’s system. He has made 20 Premier League appearances this season, though a lack of consistent starts has limited his overall impact. Despite that, the former England international remains unshaken in his self-assessment. “I will always back myself. I know what I’m about and what I can bring,” he said.

Beyond personal ambition, Mount framed the challenge of restoring United to the summit of English football as a source of genuine motivation. “Being a part of getting this club back to the top, where it deserves to be, is super special,” he said.

The wider context adds weight to Mount’s optimism. United appear on course to secure Champions League football for the 2026/27 season, which would strengthen their ability to attract and retain top talent during the summer transfer window. A return to European football’s elite competition is widely considered a prerequisite for any serious domestic title push.

United’s Premier League title drought places them in stark contrast to rivals Manchester City and Arsenal, who have dominated the division in recent years. City claimed five of the last seven league titles before their recent dip in form, while Arsenal have mounted sustained challenges without yet converting them into a championship.

For a squad still in the process of rebuilding under their current setup, Mount’s declaration reflects a cultural shift in expectations at the club. Whether the necessary squad depth, managerial stability, and consistency can be assembled over the coming months remains to be seen, but the intent from within the dressing room appears unambiguous heading into the 2026/27 campaign.
