German Bundesliga club Union Berlin have made football history with the appointment of Marie-Louise Eta as interim head coach of their men’s first team, confirmed on 11 April 2026. The 34-year-old becomes the first woman to manage a top-flight men’s side in any of Europe’s top five leagues — a landmark moment in the sport’s history.
The decision came in the wake of the dismissal of head coach Steffen Baumgart, whose tenure ended following a damaging defeat to Heidenheim, a result that prompted the club’s hierarchy to act. According to Pulse Sports, Union Berlin’s leadership moved swiftly to bring stability to the squad ahead of the final weeks of the season.
Eta steps into the role with Union Berlin currently 11th in the Bundesliga table and holding an 11-point cushion above the relegation zone. Despite that buffer, survival is not yet mathematically secured, and the club has opted for a change in management rather than ride out the remainder of the campaign under existing leadership.
Speaking following her appointment, Eta made clear her intent to deliver results. “I’m delighted that the club has entrusted me with this challenging responsibility,” she said. “A strength of Union has always been to pull all our forces together in such situations. I’m convinced that with the team, we’ll secure the crucial points.”
Prior to this appointment, Eta served as head coach of Union Berlin’s U19 side and had already been confirmed as the incoming head coach of the club’s women’s team ahead of the 2026-27 season. Her elevation to the men’s first team — even on an interim basis — represents a significant step both for her career and for women in football management more broadly.
While women have previously taken charge of men’s teams in lower divisions across Europe, none had previously managed a top-flight side in England, Spain, Germany, Italy, or France. Notable figures who have broken ground in men’s football at lower levels include Corinne Diacre, who managed Clermont Foot in 2014, and Carolina Morace, who took charge of Viterbese in the lower tiers of Italian football. Eta’s appointment at Bundesliga level surpasses those precedents in terms of the division’s standing.
Union Berlin carries particular significance for Nigerian football supporters. The club was a key staging post in the career of Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi, who permanently rejoined the club on 20 July 2021. Union Berlin reportedly paid £6.5 million to secure his services before he subsequently completed a transfer to Nottingham Forest in 2022, where he has gone on to establish himself in the Premier League.
The appointment of Eta arrives at a moment when the broader conversation around gender representation in football management continues to gather pace. With UEFA and several national federations actively promoting pathways for women into coaching roles at all levels, Union Berlin’s decision — however circumstantial its timing — places the club at the centre of that debate. Whether Eta secures Bundesliga survival in the coming weeks will inevitably shape the narrative around this historic appointment.
