Maria Guardiola, model and eldest daughter of Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, has spoken candidly about her relationship with her father and the characteristic they both recognise in each other — an unrelenting stubbornness when it comes to achieving their goals.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Maria described the shared trait in her own words: “My father and I joke that I inherited his stubbornness. When we set our minds to something, we pursue it with tunnel vision until we achieve it. From my mother, I inherited confidence and a sense of independence.”

The revelation comes at a significant moment for the Guardiola family. Pep is currently guiding Manchester City through what could prove to be one of his most consequential Premier League title challenges, while Maria has established herself as a presence in the modelling world, having accompanied her father to some of the most defining occasions of his managerial career.

Among those occasions was Barcelona’s victory over Manchester United in the 2009 UEFA Champions League final, which Maria witnessed as a child. More recently, she was present at Wembley when City lifted the Carabao Cup — a result that carried added weight given the club’s ongoing rivalry with Arsenal.

“Following my dad around the world to watch games gave me special memories and brought the family together,” she told Vanity Fair. “I feel incredibly grateful for the experiences I’ve had. Although it was sometimes a challenge, my parents made the transitions easier and helped my siblings and me take advantage of opportunities.”

Maria, who acknowledges she was “raised to understand the privilege of my circumstances”, also reflected on the guidance her parents offered throughout her upbringing. “My parents have always advised me to find what I’m passionate about. They encourage me to try new things, to accept failure, and to keep searching until I find my calling,” she said.

The family dynamic has shifted in the past year. Guardiola and Maria’s mother, Cristina Serra, separated in 2025 after 12 years of marriage, having been together for three decades. No official explanation was given for the split, though reports suggested Guardiola’s demanding work schedule may have been a contributing factor.

Guardiola’s professional future also remains a subject of considerable speculation. His current contract with Manchester City runs until 2027, but according to reports, some within football circles believe he could depart the club as early as this summer. The 54-year-old Catalan has managed City since 2016 and has delivered six Premier League titles during that period, along with the club’s first UEFA Champions League trophy in 2023.

With City still in contention for the 2025-26 Premier League title, Guardiola’s immediate focus remains on the pitch. Should City claim the title this season, it would represent another landmark achievement in a managerial career already regarded among the most decorated in the modern era.
