The midfielder scored a goal and hit the post in what was a superb first half from the Red Devils that ensured they walked away with all three points against Sean Dyche’s side.

McTominay, 25, was particularly impressive as he opened the scoring after 10 minutes, hitting Cristiano Ronaldo’s heavy touch past Wayne Hennesey.

He was then later denied a sensational brace as another one of his shots was tipped onto the post by the keeper, but Ronaldo was on hand to tap into the empty net.

Before that, Jadon Sancho had doubled his side’s lead with a smart finish from inside the penalty area.

While United had an overall better performance than in the 1-1 draw against Newcastle, fans on social media only had one name in their mouth – Scott McTominay.

On Twitter, cheeky fans went to the lengths of comparing him to the prime Andrea Pirlo, based on his performances.

“Nah, this is not McTominay, it's Pirlo in disguise... but I love this McTominay,” one fan said.
“Mctominay having his annual game where he turns into Zidane,” said another.

“Scott McTominay was flawless today, defensively but more surprising offensively. Felt he was involved in everything, arguably one of his best performances in a United shirt. There’s a well rounded midfielder within him which needs unlocking” another fan observed.

What McTominay said:

Speaking after the match, the Scotland international said his side’s performance was the best so far under Ralf Rangnick.

"Probably first-half as a team [best display under Rangnick]. We were a bit flat second-half for whatever reason. We need to get that for a full 90 minutes which we haven't really had this year. But we are learning and adapting,” he said.

One huge positive following the win against the Clarets is United are now enjoying a rather subtle unbeaten streak that has stretched to eight matches – the longest streak since the middle of last season.
