Both teams went into the clash off a stunning Champion League outing as they won their respective continental fixtures in midweek.

The Blues were hoping to use the Sunday, November 28, clash to restore their four-point lead at the top of the log, only to suffer a blow as they settled for a solitary point.

The west Londoners had to rely on a Jorginho penalty to secure the point, having fallen behind courtesy of Jadon Sancho's opener.

This was United's second match under the tutelage of Michael Carrick who succeeded Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the caretaker manager after the Norwegian was sacked after a poor run of results.

Carrick had earlier on led the Red Devils to victory over Villarreal and was hoping to build on the momentum during their trip to the Bridge.

Both teams paraded a muted first half, with Chelsea largely the better side with missed opportunities including Antonio Rudiger's potential opener that rattled the net.

The second half of the match was marked with more intensity as the visitors drew the first blood via Sancho who fired home the opener after a howler from Jorginho.

The Italian midfielder made amends to his blunder in the 69th minute after converting from the spot with aplomb after Aaron Wan-Bissaka conceded a totally needless penalty.

Neither side could find the winner in the closing stages of the half as United kept their opponents at bay to secure a crucial point.
