The Rangers job is currently vacant following the departure of Gerrard who was recently appointed Aston Villa boss.

Metro UK reports Gerrard's departure from Glasgow was marked with the exit of the majority of his backroom staff, sending Rangers back to the drawing board in the hunt for a successor.

According to the publication, the Scottish giants are expected to go down a similar route of appointing an up-and-coming player-turned-coach as the new manager.

It is believed Giovanni van Bronckhorst is currently the favourite to land the job alongside Chelsea legends John Terry and Frank Lampard.

However, it is Carrick who appears to have received a lot of the backing, with former Rangers midfielder Adam throwing him in the mix for the role.

Adam described Carrick as a "good coach" who has had the privilege of being part of a coaching staff with a big club.

"I’ll throw a name in the hat: Michael Carrick. He has been at Manchester United, a big club, good coach," Adam told the BBC’s Sportsound podcast.

Incidentally, Adam is believed to be angling to form part of Carrick's backroom staff should the former Man United midfielder land the role.

Carrick was first named part of United's backroom team when José Mourinho took over as manager.

He went on to retain the position after the arrival of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who decided to keep him.

Brendan Rodgers house-hunting Cheshire

Earlier, TUKO.co.ke reported Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has reportedly taken a step closer to the Man United job.

Rodgers is believed to be United's No.1 choice to succeed embattled Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

According to The Sun, the former Liverpool boss has already begun house-hunting in Cheshire and he is looking for a family home in football's jet-set areas of Wilmslow and Alderley Edge.

The development is expected to intensify speculation the ex-Celtic manager will be taking over at Old Trafford before Christmas.
