Premier League campaigners Manchester United have confirmed the death of their former striker Alex Dawson who played for the Old Trafford landlords for four seasons.

The Scot played for Manchester United under Matt Busby before leaving the Premier League side for Preston in 1961.

During his active playing days years ago, Alex Dawson was known as one of the most feared strikers in the world considering his pace and power.

Throughout his football career, Alex Dawson made 394 games and scored 212 goals before he retired from the game of football.

Busby handed Alex Dawson his League debut as a 17-year-old on April 22, 1957 where he netted in a 2-0 win over Burnley.

Alex Dawson featured more prominently after the Munich disaster struck in February 1958 in which eight Manchester United players died then.

In total, Alex Dawson scored 54 goals for Manchester United before he left Old Trafford.

''Our deepest sympathies are with the loved ones of former United forward and Busby Babe, Alex Dawson who has sadly passed away at the age of 80.

''He will be fondly remembered by all of us at the club. May he rest in peace,'' Manchester United explained.

Meanwhile, Manchester United are currently occupying fifth position on the Premier League standings with 62 points and with two games to end the season.

Earlier, Legit.ng had reported how Premier League side Manchester United reportedly joined the race to sign Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen this summer in what could be a big move for the Super Eagles star.

The Red Devils will now be facing serious competition from Italian side Napoli who are also interested in signing Victor Osimhen this summer.

Victor Osimhen and Napoli chiefs have been involved in serious transfer talks in which the Nigerian even traveled to Italy to see Gattuso and his chiefs.

But Manchester United have not given up on the possibility of them to have Victor Osimhen this summer and they are ready to go for him.
