The Argentine shot-stopper worked with the Portuguese manager when they won the Europa League title in 2017.

Having been told that he was surplus to requirement at Old Trafford, the 36-year-old has been linked with a move to join Boca Juniors and Racing Club.

However, new development reveals that the former Sampdoria and Monaco keeper is tempted to work with Mourinho again.

And with his experience in the Serie A, he could be an asset to the ex-Tottenham and Real Madrid handler when his reign at the club kicks off next season.

Romero spent four seasons at Sampdoria before completing a move to United in 2015 under Dutchman Louis van Gaal.

According to Mirror and SunSport, the Argentine was close to a move to Everton last summer but the deal collapsed after United officials rejecting the Toffee's £2million loan fee offer.

During his stay at Old Trafford, Romero featured in 61 games for United conceding 27 goals and keeping 39 clean sheets.

He has never been favoured under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who prefers David de Gea and Dean Henderson to him.

Mourinho's plot to sign Romero comes just weeks after the Portuguese was linked with a move for Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka. reported Mourinho is said to be keen to rebuild his own team after succeeding Paulo Fonseca at AS Roma.

The experienced manager is said to have put Xhaka on his transfer wishlist ahead of the summer.

Xhaka has become an increasingly unpopular figure across his five-year stint at the Emirates especially among fans.

Reports suggest the Gunners would be open to letting him go, with the club needing to undergo an overhaul after a disappointing season.
