The Gunners started the match brightly, dominating the opening exchanges of the encounter as the home side struggled to settle in.

The Unai Emery-tutored side however wasted glorious goalscoring chances and had an early penalty appeal brushed off, before Nicolas Pepe failing to add a finishing touch to an Arsenal attack moments later.

Sheffield United went on to punish their visitors in the 30th minute as Mousset put the home side ahead, beating Bernd Leno after benefiting from O’Connell's well-placed pass.

Emery was forced to make tactical changes in the second-half of the match, with Dani Ceballos replacing Joe Willock at the break, before Alexander Lacazette coming on for Granit Xhaka.
