  • Mason Greenwood will have to wait a little bit longer before returning to professional football
  • Manchester United are yet to make a final decision but it is certain he will not return this season
  • Greenwood has been out for more than a year but remains under contract at Old Trafford until 2025

Manchester United have reportedly communicated their stand to Mason Greenwood, with his professional future still marred by uncertainty.

Greenwood is waiting for the club to conclude its own internal investigations before they can provide a way forward, following the dropping of his assault charges in February.

The striker has been suspended for over a year now with no access to first-team training or any of the club's facilities, after he was charged with coercive behaviour and sexual assault.

The dropping of his charges by the Crown Prosecution Services left Man United with a delicate decision to make on whether or not to allow the 21-year-old back into the fold.

Now, as GMS reports, the Red Devils have reportedly communicated to Greenwood that he will not be allowed to return to the club, with the earliest return date set for next season.

Greenwood and United's internal discussions

The United hierarchy has held a number of meetings with Greenwood, where the player is said to have communicated his desire to get back into the pitch.

However, the bosses have reiterated that they will not rush their internal processes.

Even if he was allowed back immediately, it would have been highly unlikely that Erik ten Hag could have used him this season, having been out for more than a year.

The club might still be in three competitions but it will take time for the striker to get back to full speed once his suspension is lifted.

His contract runs until 2025.

When Greenwood mocked Ronaldo

Even as the club grapples with that predicament, Sports Brief reported -via the Atheltic - on how Greenwood's situation was unravelling before his tribulations.

The publication reported that the striker had discipline issues at Old Trafford from the word go, with senior figures at the club trying to straighten him out often.

Greenwood once dissed Cristiano Ronaldo, referring to the club legend as 'dead' in terms of being past his good days and effetively being a player who is finished.
