Ukraine vs Portugal: Ronaldo nets 700th career goal in Selecao defeat

Cristiano Ronaldo netted his 700th career goals as Ukraine defeated Portugal 2-1 in a tough Euro 2020 Group B contest on Monday night, October 14, at NSK Olimpijs Kiev.

The performance on the the night saw Portugal suffer their first defeat since their loss against Uruguay in round of 16 at 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The Selecao are also eight points behind group leaders Ukraine’s Yellow-Blue, who sealed a place in the Euro 2020 with their victory over the European champions.

Portugal made only two changes from the squad that defeated Luxembourg in Lisbon on Friday, with the pair of Goncalo Guedes and Joao Mario making the starting XI.

Roman Yaremchuk scored Ukraine's opener from close range off a decent corner-kick that Portugal shot-stopper Rui Patricio failed to keep out just inside six minutes of the match.

The hosts went on to double the advantage through Andriy Yarmolenko from a tap in to see Portugal go two-goals down after 26 minutes.

The trio of Mario, Danilo and Bernardo Silva were on top of their game, with the reigning champions keen on staging a comeback before the end of the first 45 minutes.

Ronaldo came close to reducing the deficit for Portugal with a powerful free-kick from 30 yards out in the 49th minute of the contest, but Andriy Pyatov parried the ball away from danger.

With 20 minutes left on the clock, the Juve star blasted home his 700th career goal from the penalty spot after Taras Stepanenko deliberately handled the ball.

Portugal's efforts to earn an equaliser soon after failed, as the home side held on to seal their passage to Euro 2020.
