He gave the reason for doing it was to wind up Netherlands national teammate Virgil van Dijk, who he knows from the national team, always touches it before every game. The reason is believable, as he and Van Dijk touched it at the same time.

The Burnley striker, who joined Manchester United after terminating his Besiktas contract, claimed he had been an FC Twente fan from childhood, but in a 2020 interview, he professed admiration for Liverpool, as reported by Caught Offside.

''...and as a proud player now for Manchester United my dedication to this club can never be questioned,'' he wrote.
''Sunday was a terrible day for all of us, we are putting everything into making it right in the next weeks. We will bounce back together and achieve our aims this season.''
