  • The Red Devils were condemned to a 7-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium in one of their worst losses

March 5, 2023 is a day many Manchester United fans may not want to reflect upon.

This is after the club suffered a historic 7-0 defeat at the hands of rivals, Liverpool in an epic Premier League clash played at Anfield.

The match came at a time when United were enjoying a fine run of form across competitions that had seen them beat Barcelona in the Europa League and qualify for the quarter-final of the FA Cup after beating West Ham in the fifth round.

Buoyed by their impressive form, many United fans were positive their team would sink Liverpool at Anfield to keep their slim Premier League title hopes alive.

Liverpool demolish Man United

However, they went on to suffer a humiliating defeat and one of the worst in the history of the club.

Cody Gakpo, who joined Liverpool last summer, ignited the Reds' impressive win, with the Dutchman netting a brace.

According to Goal, Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez also scored a brace apiece to put United to the sword.

Metro UK reports the scoreline is Liverpool's biggest-ever win over their fierce rivals in the history of both clubs.

Man United's biggest EPL defeats

Incredibly, this was not the first time Man United had lost by a relatively bigger margin by their standards in a Premier League match.

The Red Devils have in the past suffered humiliating defeats, with Liverpool and Man City among the responsible teams.

Sports Brief takes a look at United six biggest ever defeats in the Premier League:

Chelsea 5-0 Manchester United | October 3, 1999

Manchester United had been enjoying a fantastic run of form when Chelsea handed them a reality check.

Guys Poyet and Chris Sutton starred for the Blues, with the latter scoring a brace to help his side hammer United 5-0.

Newcastle 5-0 Manchester United | October 20, 1996

Having missed out on the Premier League title in the previous season by four points, Newcastle were keen to set the ball rolling in the following season.

They made a good account of themselves by beating United 5-0 at St. James Park, with Alan Shearer, David Ginola, and Les Ferdinand all scoring.

Manchester United 1-6 Tottenham | October 4, 2020

Back in 2022, Jose Mourinho returned to haunt his former side as he led Tottenham to a 6-1 huge win over the Red Devils at Old Trafford.

The defeat was one of Man United's worst in their history.

Manchester United 0-5 Liverpool | October 24, 2021

Man United have not had the best of experiences with Liverpool in recent years.

In 2021, the Reds downed United 5-0 at Old Trafford, with usual suspect, Salah getting the job done with a brilliant hat-trick.

Naby Keita and Diogo Jota were also on target for the Merseysiders.

Manchester United 1-6 Manchester City | October 23, 2011

The 2011/12 Premier League season was a historic one for both Man United and rivals City.

While United fans would not want to reflect much on the season, the City fanbase will recall it as a memorable one.

Mario Balotelli was the shining light during the two teams' derby clash as City went on to win the league on goal difference.

Liverpool 7-0 Manchester United | March 5, 2023

And final on the list is the humiliating defeat at Anfield on Sunday, where Erik ten Hag's men were humbled 7-0.

Gakpo, Salah, and Nunez all scored a brace each to sink an in-form Man United.

De Gea appeals to fans

Sports Brief earlier reported on goalkeeper, David De Gea appealing to United fans after what he called a disastrous defeat to Liverpool.

He urged the fans to stick by the team while they looked ahead to coming games and focused on turning things around as soon as possible.

The loss was also a bitter pill to swallow for ten Hag, who said there had to be conversations around what he called an unacceptable loss.
