  • Liverpool and Manchester United will renew their fierce rivalry on Sunday, March 5
  • The two clubs have a rich history, and have won the most trophies of any club in England
  • In terms of silverware, Liverpool slightly edge out Manchester United, but that could change if the Red Devils win another trophy this season
  • Erik Ten Hag’s side recently won the Carabao Cup, and are fighting for three other trophies including the Premier League

In a rivalry that runs through decades, Liverpool and Manchester United are two of the most successful clubs in English soil.

The two clubs will renew their rivalry over the weekend, with both teams needing a win for contrasting reasons.

For Liverpool, it will be a chance to close the gap on the top four, but United, who have an outside chance of winning the title, will hope to at last keep up with second placed Manchester City.

Despite experiencing different fortunes this season, there are no clear favourites in a derby, and if history serves well, the game is bound to be a cracker at Anfield.

Who has more trophies?

In terms of silverware, Liverpool and United are considered two of the most decorated clubs in England.

United had gotten a massive edge over Liverpool during the Sir Alex Ferguson era as the Scottish manager was almost synonymous with trophies.

But things have not been the same in recent years, and United endured a miserable five-year trophy drought, a time in which Liverpool managed to win the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

According to stats recorded on Transfermkt, United’s six-year trophy dry spell was quite damaging for them as Liverpool managed to pull ahead in terms of the most number of trophies won.

Excluding the Community Shield, Liverpool currently have 45 major trophies to their name compared to United’s 43.

However, Liverpool fans will be sweating over their record as United have made a statement of intent with their recent triumph at the Carabao Cup.

Can Man United catch up to Liverpool?

As far as the title race is concerned, United may find it hard to catch up to runaway leaders Arsenal, who are eight points ahead of them.

They are however in the last 16 of the Europa League, where they will come up against Real Betis after knocking out Barcelona.

Erik ten Hag’s side is also in the last 16 of the FA Cup.

Klopp claims United are in title race

Sports Brief also reported on Jurgen Klopp’s interesting claims about the Premier League title race.

Ahead of the derby against Manchester United on Sunday, Klopp was quick to admit the Red Devils were in the race, despite being eight points behind Arsenal.

“They do well this year. They are where they are. They have turned into a result machine, squeezing results out with really good performances,” Klopp said.
