“In this case a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction. In these circumstances, we are under a duty to stop the case. We have explained our decision to all parties” the statement reads.

Manchester United are yet to comment on the case as of the time of filing this report and it remains to be seen whether the young player will return to action for the club.

Reactions to Greenwood's case

The news was met with varying reactions, with many social activists condemning the dropping of the case, while football fans, especially that of Manchester United were happy it was dropped.

That man should be behind bars. Ridiculous these charges have been dropped all because he’s an English footballer. He should never be able to touch a PL pitch again. @ManUtd @premierleague

@Linn_FPL wrote:

Disgusting and vile. It makes me feel sick that someone can get away with this when the evidence is as clear as they will ever be. Charges dropped doesn’t mean he’s innocent, the justice system is an absolute (expletive) joke.

@dezfootie wrote:

Interesting what action Man United would take regarding Mason Greenwood. Do you bring him back and integrate him into the squad despite the guy not kicking a ball for more than a year, or do you just terminate his contract to prove you’re a Morally Upright Organization?

@Don_Falcone2 tweeted:

Absolutely disgusting. So, he can beat and $exually abuse a woman and just get away with it? Hopefully no club touches him with a barge pole. He ruined his football career the moment that clear evidence of abuse came out. Disgusting decision, a bit like that (expletive) at Arsenal.

A Manchester United fan wrote Haters ain't ready Mason Greenwood, another wrote we can't wait for him, while some others reiterated their voice with chants of getting him in the squad.

Mendy cleared of assault charges

Sports Brief earlier reported that Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy was cleared of assault charges over a year after he was suspended at Manchester City.

The France international was cleared of six charges while he will face retrial over two other charges which could not be clarified.

The Citizens suspended the 2018 World Cup winner and stopped paying his salaries subsequently, even though he maintains his innocence.
