According to The Sun, the England international has significantly fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford, with Ten Hag preferring the partnership of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez at the heart of United's defence.

Maguire, who joined the Manchester club from Leicester City in a record transfer deal, has managed just five appearances so far this term.

Inter Milan linked with Maguire

However, the centre-back could be handed a lifeline, with reports suggesting that Inter Milan are keen on his services.

Metro UK reports that the Italian giants have already enquired about a loan move for the Manchester United centre-back.

Inter's interest in Maguire comes after United reportedly declined an offer from the club to sign Victor Lindelof under similar terms.

The Nerazzurri are due to lose their own captain in Milan Skriniar, who already has a pre-contract agreement with Paris Saint-Germain.

The San Siro-based outfit are therefore in the market for a replacement for Skriniar to help them challenge for the Serie A title.

Maguire fights for starting place

Sports Brief also reported on Maguire being determined to fight for his place in Manchester United's starting XI, after being relegated to the bench in recent weeks.

The Red Devils captain was a started in the 3-1 win over Reading on Saturday and put on a masterful performance in defence alongside Victor Lindelof.

Maguire admitted after the game that it was not ideal to be left on the bench, but said he was nevertheless determined to show his manager just what he is capable of.
