Manchester United captain Harry Maguire says he is living the dream at this current stage of his career, but has also outlined what is next for him at club and international level.

The former Leicester City player has endured ups and downs since his £80m move to Old Trafford and has endured heavy criticism from the media and ex-players of late.

However, he said he is not affected by the negativity around his performances and records, calling his current situation 'a dip in his career' and 'something most players go through'.

Maguire living the dream

At 29, being the most expensive defender in the world, captain of Manchester United captain, and having 52 England caps is certainly a dream many would wish for, and this is so for Maguire.

He made this known while speaking to the BBC from Qatar, where he is with England at the World Cup.

"When I look back on my career and put everything into perspective, if I was a young boy, then I'm living the dream. I'm doing everything I always wanted to do." he said.

Maguire wants to win trophies

Regardless of being pleased with where he is in his career, Maguire recognises a need to take the next step and win silverware, something he has not achieved yet.

"Where I'm at at the moment, the next stage of my career is I want to start winning trophies."

He lost two finals with Manchester United and England in 2021 respectively - namely the UEFA Europa League final and the UEFA Euro final.

Van der Vaart jibes Maguire

Sports Brief earlier reported that Dutch ex-international Rafael Van Der Vaart fired an indirect shot at Maguire while describing German defender Niklas Sule.

Van Der Vaart called Sule 'a German Maguire' after Die Mannschaft's lacklustre presence at the World Cup, where the 2014 champions were eliminated in the group stage for the second consecutive time.

Maguire has been criticised for some time by Van Der Vaart, who also commented that the English defender 'fools Manchester United and goes home happy'.
