Gakpo shortlisted for Ronaldo role

The Sun reports that the Red Devils are leading the transfer race for PSV Eindhoven star Gakpo, who is expected to fill Ronaldo's shoes at the Theatre of Dreams.

Gakpo was a top transfer target for the Premier League giants last summer, but the transfer failed to materialise.

The Dutch youngster continues to draw interest from a number of European clubs, with Liverpool and Arsenal thought to be interested.

However, according to CalcioMercato, United have taken a huge step towards signing the 23-year-old, who could arrive at Old Trafford as soon as January.

The Netherlands international has amassed a staggering 13 goals and 17 assists in 24 appearances, across all competitions.

In a statement released by the Portuguese star, the 37-year-old maintained he still has a strong affection for Man United and the fans.
