  • Erik ten Hag was left frustrated after his players changed the game plan during their Premier League game against Aston Villa
  • United decided to cross the ball first time to Cristiano Ronaldo in what Ten Hag saw as not being helpful to the striker
  • Ronaldo was handed the armband for the day, with Bruno Fernandes suspended and Harry Maguire left on the bench

Manchester United Head Coach Erik ten Hag has criticized his players for resorting to using long balls during their game against Aston Villa.

United were humiliated at Villa Park in Unai Emery's first game in charge. The Red Devils appeared to miss the creativity of Bruno Fernandes, who was out on suspension, having accumulated five yellow cards.

Villa scored twice in quick succession in the opening minutes through Leon Bailey and a wonderful Lucas Digne freekick. Luke Shaw forced an own goal at the stroke of half-time to halve the deficit.

Jacob Ramsey, however, restored Villa's 2-0 lead after the break to ensure Emery's second stint in England started with a victory.

Ronaldo had a frustrating afternoon

At some point, United decided to spray crosses from deep, looking for Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo, who was the captain for the day, failed to make an impact for his side.

Ten Hag's coaching style has been characterised by building from the back and constant passing as they bid time to launch attacks. Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, the former Ajax manager admonished his side for changing the plan.

"I think it was stupid to do that. We delivered too quickly crosses in from too far and too forcing. Then, we don't help him. We have to bring in the crosses at the right moment. I think in the second half also we bring too quickly the crosses in."

Ronaldo only had one clear-cut chance in the first half as his terrible season in front of goal continued.

Ronaldo and Tyrone Mings clash WWE style

Sports Brief has also reported that Aston Villa vs Manchester United Premier League clash was marked with dramatic scenes as players clashed midway through the match.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Tyrone Mings sparked the huge brawl after the duo wrestled each other to the ground.

Ronaldo came to blows with the English star while the Red Devils were on the attack.
