It has been quite a week at Manchester United. Cristiano Ronaldo has been at the centre of a saga that has threatened to derail the 2022/23 season.

The Portuguese forward refused to come on versus Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday, leading manager Erik ten Hag to stamp his authority on the team by banishing the star from the first team.

Trouble was brewing at Old Trafford at the start of last week. Ronaldo was subbed during their match against Newcastle United and was visibly furious about the decision, according to ESPN.

On Thursday, United produced arguably their best performance of the season against Spurs, but Ronaldo refused to come on and then proceeded to leave the stadium entirely before the final whistle.

Jose Mourinho on coaching Ronaldo

In a recent video which has gone viral on Tiktok, the former Manchester United boss said a manager cannot teach big players like Ronaldo how to play football, according to Sportbible.

"If you are not able to coach the big players, you are not able to coach anyone. It is very important for a coach to understand you are not going to teach them how to play football."

Mourinho has coached some legendary footballers, including Ronaldo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto'o. He's also coached some volatile characters, such as Diego Costa.

"You are going to teach them how to play football on that team," he commented in the video.

Mourinho coached Ronaldo at Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, forming a successful partnership. For instance, the two led Real Madrid to the 2012 La Liga title, winning it by 100 points in a record-breaking season, according to Bleacher Report.

Mourinho's problem with Ronaldo

Sports Brief earlier reported on Jose Mourinho revealing his only problem with Ronaldo while at Real Madrid.

Mourinho said when Ronaldo was criticised from a tactical viewpoint, the Portuguese did not take it very well.

This became a problem for the legendary gaffer, who felt that Ronaldo thought he knew everything.
