  • Cristiano Ronaldo attempted to score a cheeky goal against Newcastle but end up getting booked
  • The 37-year-old nipped the ball from the opposition goalkeeper to slot it into an empty net from a Newcastle free kick
  • But the referee was unimpressed with Ronaldo’s cheeky tactic and ended up booking the superstar

Cristiano Ronaldo was controversially booked after putting the ball into the net from an opposition free kick on Sunday, October 16.

It took place after referee Craig Pawson awarded a free kick to Newcastle deep in their own territory.

As reported on SportBible, appeared Ronaldo strongly believed Newcastle had already played a quick free kick as he stole the ball from the goalie and scored what he hoped would have been his third goal of the season in all competitions.

But Craig Pawson was not having it and as he was surrounded by protesting Manchester United players, he brandished a yellow card for Ronaldo.

The incident has since sparked debate on whether Ronaldo was being cheeky or he was genuinely robbed of a clean goal.

Fan reactions

This is what fans had to say on social media:

"No. It’s a goal by the rule. The game is on after the defender passes it back to Pope," while another commented: "That should have been a goal. The Newcastle defender plays the ball to Pope."
"The ball was kicked from where the foul occurred. How is it not in play? Pawson has screwed this match up so bad it’s not even funny."
“Ok so, let’s break this down, the defender passes to the keeper. Keeping the ball in play.”

Ronaldo was taken off and replaced by Marcus Rashford in the 72nd minute a move that left the Portuguese forward distraught.

United could not find a breakthrough as the game ended in a 0-0 stalemate.

Ronaldo picks prestigious award from Alex Ferguson

Earlier, Sports Brief reported on how Ronaldo was involved in an incredible moment before Man United's Premier League clash with Newcastle at Old Trafford.

This is after the veteran forward picked a prestigious award handed to him by legendary United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

The award was in recognition of Ronaldo's recent career milestone achieved during the Red Devils' encounter against Everton last weekend.
