  • Erik ten Hag has taken a rather unusual step of thanking Manchester City for thrashing his Manchester United side on Sunday
  • Manchester United went into the Manchester derby on the back of impressive wins, most notably against Liverpool and Arsenal
  • However, the defending Premier League champions gave the Red Devils a tough reality check at the Etihad Stadium

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has ironically thanked his Manchester City counterpart, Pep Guardiola for humiliating his side during the Manchester derby.

The Red Devils were completely overrun by their cross-city rivals, with both Erling Haaland and Phil Foden scoring thrice.

Antony and substitute Anthony Martial scored later on, but the damage was already done for United.

Speaking ahead of United's next game in the Europa League, ten Hag thanked Guardiola for the eye-opening defeat, as the Mirror reports.

You beat Arsenal and Liverpool, now we get a reality check with City, so we know we have to step up. So, thank you for the lesson, Pep and City, we will take that and we have to understand that we have to do things much better.

Manchester United recovered from a lackluster start to the Premier League season with back-to-back defeats by embarking on a four-match winning run. The form was punctuated with losses to Real Sociedad before the humbling at City.

Ten Hag's first priority will be to steer United back to the Champions League, given that the Premier League title looks like a far-fetched dream at the moment.

Manchester United's new signing, Antony ignored ten Hag's instructions during the Manchester derby

Sports Brief had earlier reported that new details have now emerged of how Manchester United's latest recruit, Antony ignored his manager's instructions during the Manchester derby on Sunday.

Manchester United were beaten by their cross-city rivals 6-3 in a majorly one-sided affair at the Etihad Stadium. Erling Haaland and Phil Foden both grabbed hat-tricks, with Antony and Anthony Martial halving the deficit late in the game.

Despite scoring a wonderful goal in his second successive Premier League game, Antony failed to heed Erik ten Hag's instructions.
