Manchester United legend David Beckham took a journey down memory to recollect his first encounter with Britain's longest-serving monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.

The Queen sadly passed away at Balmoral Castle in Scotland on Thursday at the age of 96 following 70 years on the throne.

And since her passing, glowing tributes have been pouring in from individuals and groups across various spheres of life including the sporting fraternity, particularly the football industry.

Among the distinguished sports personalities, David Beckham, who penned an emotional tribute on Instagram, recalled his first meeting with Her Royal Majesty which did not go as planned.

The 46-year-old was speechless in his maiden encounter with the Queen back in 2002.

David opened up about his priceless meeting with the Queen when the ex-England captain and his wife Victoria hosted a lunch event where they dined alongside honoured MBE recipients.

He remembered she said as quoted by Mirror: "How's Victoria, how're the kids?" But it soon turned awkward as he added: "I couldn't even answer, it was an incredible moment."

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that as the world continues to grieve the demise of Queen Elizabeth II, England and Manchester United legend David Beckham has penned his tribute to Her Majesty, saying he is "truly saddened" by the news.

In a touching Instagram post, the six-time Premier League champion wrote that not only were the British devasted by the news but also people from every corner of the world.

The 47-year-old has met the Queen on several occasions and was appointed an OBE in 2003 during the Queen's Birthday for services to the sport of football. He stated that Her Majesty was an inspiration to all.
