The Red Devils finished in 6th place and thus missed out on Champions League spots.

Captain Harry Maguire was often blamed for the side's shambolic defensive performance. It has now emerged that even as fans and pundits called for Maguire to be dropped, Cristiano Ronaldo led the calls inside the dressing room.

A report from the Athletic, as quoted by the Daily Mail, indicates that Ronaldo, alongside Raphael Varane and Paul Pogba, approached Rangnick at United's Carrington training base and asked him to demote Maguire.

Ronaldo is said to have told Rangnick in no uncertain terms that Maguire was part of the problem the club was facing.

The interim manager is said to have rebuked the Portuguese star. Rangnick felt it was inappropriate to talk about Maguire, yet he wasn't present to defend himself.

The Austrian manager stuck with Maguire. Ironically, both Ronaldo and Maguire appear to have been dropped by new boss Erik ten Hag this season. Maguire was retained as the captain, but he has found himself warming the bench in United's last two games.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, wanted to move on but has failed to find any suitors.

Erik ten Hag confirms Cristiano Ronaldo will remain at Manchester United

Sports Brief has also reported that Erik ten Hag has all but confirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo will not be leaving Manchester United this summer, as earlier projected.

Ronaldo has been pushing to depart Old Trafford with the hope of joining a club playing in the Champions League.

However, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner has seen his transfer options get limited, with potential suitors failing to submit bids. Ronaldo's failure to sort his future has further seen him lose his place in the first team, having failed to make a Premier League start in two of United's most recent outings.
