Manchester United academy graduate Tom Cleverley has predicted his former club will struggle without the services of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo missed much of United’s pre-season preparations due to ‘family reasons’ but returned for their opening day Premier League loss to Brighton.

The 37-year-old former Juventus forward has widely been linked with a possible exit from the club, barely a year after his sensational return to Old Trafford.

Cristiano's value at United has been called to question following his wantaway stance but Watford skipper Tom Cleverley thinks the Red Devils will be worse off without the Portuguese talisman.

“It’s a difficult one, he’s been an absolute legend at the club,” Cleverley told talkSPORT Breakfast.
“Do I think he helps them get Champions League football? For sure.
“He’s not a number nine that’s going to win you Champions Leagues and leagues anymore but I don’t think that’s where United are at.
“I think he definitely has a big part to play for the club, without his goals they would struggle even more.
“But as far as a long term direction they need to find a different way which is what they’re struggling with at the minute.”
