  • Cristiano returned to Manchester United on Tuesday for crunch talks
  • The talks did not break the stalemate between the player and club as he maintains he still wants to leave Old Trafford
  • New details have now emerged suggesting the Portugal star has asked to be released from his contract

Cristiano Ronaldo runs the risk of becoming a free agent after the 37-year old reportedly asked Manchester United to release him from his contract.

Ronaldo still has a year remaining on his £360,000-a-week deal at Manchester United, but wants to walk away from the club early.

After missing preseason under new manager Erik Ten Hag, Ronaldo made his way back to United for showdown talks with the club’s hierarchy and the new manager.

As reported by Daily Mail, talks did not go as expected, and Ronaldo maintains he wants to leave the club, one year after an emotional return.

Despite Ten Hag breaking down his vision for the club to Ronaldo, the Portuguese star would not budge as he maintained his desire to play for a club in the Champions League.

Despite wanting out, there are still no enquiries from top clubs about the availability of Ronaldo.

The likes of Chelsea, Manchester City, Paris Saint Germain and more recently Bayern Munich have all distanced themselves from a possible transfer.

If Ronaldo is released by United, he will possibly become a free agent, pending a deal from a different club.

How Man United players treated Ronaldo

Details also emerged on how Manchester United players treated Cristiano Ronaldo after his return to the club's training ground.

Having reported to the Carrington Training Complex on Tuesday, July 26, Ronalo was accompanied by his agent, Jorge Mendes, with talks on Ronaldo's future with United taking centre stage.

Ronaldo was reportedly accorded a warm reception from his Man United teammates on his return.

According to Spanish outlet AS, the 37-year-old met United boss Erik ten Hag upon his arrival, with the two understood to have discussed the Dutchman's project at the club and his mission to bring back the glory days.
