The football world has been plunged into mourning following the death of former Rangers goalkeeper Andy Goram.

Goram passed away aged 58 after a brave battle with oesophagal cancer.

Rangers confirmed Goram’s passing on social media, with the club releasing a statement saying:

"The thoughts of the directors, management, players and staff are today with Andy's family, and would ask that their privacy is respected at this sad time. Funeral details will be communicated in due course."

Sports Brief earlier reported of how the goalkeeper had a scan at Monklands Hospital where he was informed he has stage four oesophageal cancer.

Goram was given an option of chemotherapy sessions to help alleviate the condition but turned down the option as it would allow him to live just 12 weeks more.

Goram, a legend

Andy Goram is one of the few sportsmen to have been capped by his nation in two different disciplines – football and cricket.

At club level, he helped Rangers win five Scottish Premier League titles, three Scottish Cups and two League Cups.

The shot-stopper also had a brief stint at Manchester United on loan in the 2000-01 campaign when the Red Devils won the Premier League title.

He retired from football after the 2003-04 campaign and surprised many fans when he decided to pick up the bat to take on cricket professionally.

Goram was a left-handed batsman and right-arm medium-pace bowler and played for several local clubs, and represented the national team briefly as well.
