  • Manchester United are unwilling to part ways with Scott McTominay despite the potential arrival of Frenkie De Jong
  • The Red Devils lost a number of midfielders including Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic, whose contracts ran out
  • De Jong is set to sign a five-year deal at United after the Red Devils agreed a £56million fee with Barcelona

Scot McTominay is set to remain a Manchester United player next season, despite interest from other Premier League clubs.

Having done a massive clear out of players at the end of the 2021/22 season, United are now left with fairly few experienced players in the midfield position.

Because of the efflux of midfielders at United, the club is now unwilling to let go of some key players in that position, including McTominay, reports Sunsport.

New United manager Erik ten Hag also has the likes of Fred and Donny Van de Beek at his disposal, and latest reports suggest the Old Trafford club is close to signing Frenkie De Jong from Barcelona.

An initial fee of £56million has been agreed for the talented De Jong, but it could rise to £70m with add-ons.

De Jong will reportedly sign a five-year deal at Old Trafford, and will be on a £250,000 per week wage.

What next for McTominay?

De Jong’s arrival at Manchester United is likely to bring some stiff competition for a place in the tam’s midfield.

But this is no concern for McTominay, who is considered an integral part of Ten Hag’s plans for United.

Earlier, Premier League clubs, including Newcastle made attempts to sign the midfielder, only for their bids to be rebuffed.

Having broken through the United academy in 2017, McTominay’s solid performances in midfield has made him a regular in the first team under three different managers at United.

In the Premier League last season, he made 30 appearances, primarily operating as a defensive midfielder.

Inside Arsenal’s attempts to land Raphinha

Elsewhere, Sports Brief reported of how Arsenal attempted to hijack Chelsea’s deal for Leeds midfielder Raphinha in vail.

Raphinha is set to become a Chelsea player, with new Blues owner Todd Boelhy playing a crucial role in negotiations for the Leeds star.

Arsenal were initial favourites to land the midfielder, but their initial bids last week were rejected.
