Rio Ferdinand is expecting new Manchester United manager, Erik ten Hag to overhaul the Red Devils’ defensive set up before the 2022/23 season commences.

Manchester United has been linked with a few defensive-minded players in the summer transfer window including Ajax pair Jurrien Timber and Lisandro Martinez.

But according to the Daily Mirror, Ferdinand is of the opinion that Erik ten Hag will first let go of at least one of the current center-backs at United before signing a new defender and suggested Harry Maguire could be one of the players leaving.

“I’ll be interested to see what Ten Hag does in that area [defense]. We’re talking about the young lad, Timber, at Ajax, a small center-half.

“I’ll be interested to see what happens with Varane, Lindelof, and Maguire, Eric Bailly as well, I think one or two of those will go.”

Manchester United had one of the worse records defensively in the English Premier League last campaign as the Red Devils conceded 57 goals which is the most for the club in a top-flight season in over 30 years.
