  • Legendary defender Rio Ferdinand has jumped on Raphael Varane's defence saying that the environment at Manchester United didn't allow him to perform well
  • Varane was roped in from Real Madrid with high hopes after a stellar stint in Spain but he suffered from constant injuries and poor form
  • Ferdinand says that one cannot compare the settings in Manchester United and Real Madrid

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has blamed the club for failing to help Raphael Varane adapt in his debut season in England.

Varane was signed from Real Madrid at the start of last season but struggled to replicate the high standards he set in Madrid where he won a total of 18 trophies.

Now Rio Ferdinand, an equally celebrated defender during his days, says that Varane encountered a completely different environment than what he was used to at Real Madrid.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Vibe With Five, Ferdinand quipped that United's situation last season was like a 'rabbit in headlights.' The club changed managers midseason with Ralf Rangnick taking over from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but they still recorded their lowest-ever points tally.

He went from one team - the honours there tell you it was a functioning team at the top level, all players playing to their maximum consistently - and went into an absolute reverse situation where the team has zero functionality, no confidence, no guidance and no structure of where they're going.
To go from that world-class operating and culture and standard on a daily basis to what is at Manchester United is a huge, huge shift.
He's probably sitting there like a rabbit in the headlights thinking "wow, what is this?" He hasn't been the player we expected. He would tell you that, but he couldn't tell you anything else. He'll be saying "I've got to up the levels next year. I need help."

Varane and a couple of other United stars will be hoping that the new manager Erik ten Hag will revive their fortunes as they aim to compete for major honours next season.

Manchester United look into Porto's striker Evanilson

Sports Brief had earlier reported that Portuguese giants, FC Porto, have set the price Man United must meet to sign Brazilian striker, Evanilson.

United are in the market for a prolific striker to partner Cristiano Ronaldo up front after the departure of Edinson Cavani.

The new boss, Erik ten Hag, is keen to bring in a new number nine, with the Red Devils currently very short on striker options.
