Angel Gomes has opened up on a nerve-wracking incident with his former manager Jose Mourinho.

Gomes, an England Under 21s star, rose through the ranks at Manchester United, spending 14 years at the club before his spell came to an end in 2020.

He excelled at the Manchester United academy and eventually earned the trust of Jose Mourinho, who gave him a senior debut back in 2017.

In his first-ever senior game, Gomes came on as a substitute as a 16-year-old, replacing Wayne Rooney in a game against Crystal Palace.

However, the dream call-up was short-lived as Gomes was left on the brink of tears after Mourinho openly tore into him over his performances.

Worse still, the Portuguese gaffer did so in front of the senior Manchester United players before a cup game.

“I've never actually told this story before but one time, [Mourinho] took me to a cup game with the first team after I'd played with the Under 21s.” Gomes opened up to SportBible.

“We were at the dinner table and he's come around speaking to everyone. He then looks at me and says, "I am f***ed with you".'

'I was stuck to my seat. Eventually some of the lads came over and said, "don't worry, just ignore him, he's trying to get a reaction from you. This is how he is."

Looking back at the brutal criticism, Gomes now says he understands Mourinho was only trying to get the best out of him.

Gomes, now at Lille, went on to describe Mourinho as a ‘very passionate’ coach who only wanted to let him know it was not going to be easy in top-tier football.

Mourinho is now at AS Roma and as Sports Brief reported, he once again signed Nemanja Matic for the third time.

Matic joins Roma following the expiration of his contract with the Red Devils after spending 5 years with the English Premier League side between 2017 to 2022.
