It has now reached a boiling point for the club’s fan base as 'You're not fit to wear the shirt' echoed from the AMEX Stadium away end as Leandro Trossard made it four.

After the game, Fernandes was asked about his impression of the fans. He told Sky Sports:

"I include myself on that. What we did today, what I did today, was not enough to be in the Manchester United shirt and I accept that."

Fernandes signed a new contract in April to take him up to £250,000-per-week and one of United's highest earners.

The 27-year-old has had a poor season by his own high standards, but is holding himself accountable in a tricky period.

Ronaldo holds talks with Alex Ferguson over Man Utd future

Meanwhile, with Manchester United missing out on this season’s Champions League, reports say Cristiano Ronaldo has held private meetings with his former boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ferguson was instrumental to CR7’s return to the Old Trafford last summer after the Portuguese striker left Italian giants Juventus.

Ronaldo is currently discussing his future with Sir Alex as they have held a series of private meetings over the player’s future.

Liverpool drop points vs Tottenham

Sports Brief earlier reported that Liverpool suffered a blow in the title race as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield in an interesting encounter on Saturday, May 7.

January signing Luis Diaz continued to prove why he is an important man in Jurgen Klopp’s squad as he got the equaliser after Spurs took the lead in the second half through Heung Min Son.

Manchester City, who face Newcastle in the Premier League on Sunday, will have the chance to go three points clear at the top with a win.
