  • Cavani admitted that he would not have signed a contract extension at Man United had he known Cristiano Ronaldo would be coming back to the club
  • The Uruguayan signed a one-year contract extension in May 2021 after initially signing for the club more than a year earlier
  • His spell at Manchester United has been plagued by injuries, and he has managed just two Premier League goals this season

Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani reconsidered his future at the club once he learnt of the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Cavani, 35, has his current contract expiring at the end of the season, and he is one of the many stars at Old Trafford set for the exit door.

He initially joined United from Paris Saint Germain in January 2020, before eventually signing a contract extension on May 10 2021.

Despite having his moments, his spell at the Theatre of Dreams has been marred by constant injuries that have kept him on the sidelines for long spells.

Ronaldo’s arrival

In the summer of 2021, United, in a bid to bolster their attack, announced a last minute signing of their former star Cristiano Ronaldo, who signed a two-year deal with the club.

The arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo bore the damning reality that Cavani would no longer be Man United’s go-to guy for goals, and this concerned the Uruguayan, as reported by Express.

While speaking to ESPN Brazil, El Matador admitted that learning of Cristiano’s second homecoming made him regret signing a contract extension with the club.

“Speaking the truth, for I always tell the truth, as it should be. At the moment it happened, I thought it was good that Manchester signed Cristiano.
"Knowing a little about the world of football today, the first thing I did was call my brother and I said: ‘Fernando, if this had happened a week ago, I would have asked you to sign with another club’.

Cavani made it clear it was not because he did not want to play with Ronaldo, but purely from a professional footballer’s standpoint, he knew competing for a place in the starting XI with the Portuguese superstar would be a tall order.

“It was more about understanding the situation. Not because I couldn’t play in my place at Manchester, but because there are a lot of things in football today that are different from how they were with other coaches, how it was before, years ago. But how it happened suddenly, at no time did I have any sensation. I thought: 'let’s play, do the best we can.'” He went on.

Cavani and Ronaldo’s contrasting fortunes

At United this season, Ronaldo has continued to thrive while Cavani has battled with consistent injuries.

Their goal return are also worlds apart as Ronaldo is the club’s top scorer across all competitions, while Cavani has managed to score just twice in 13 Premier League appearances.

In the one rare occasion Cavani and Ronaldo played together in attack, they both managed to get on the scoresheet as Manchester United saw off Tottenham 3-0 in October, when Solskjaer was still in charge.

Ronaldo's brace vs Brentford

In United's latest game, Cristiano bagged a brace as United saw off Brentford 3-0 in their final game at Old Trafford.

After the game, Cristiano hinted he has no plans to hang his boots any time soon and could continue playing at Man United.
