  • Manchester United were thoroughly outclassed by Liverpool, who cruised to a 4-0 victory at Anfield
  • Mohammed Salah scored his first goals in nearly a month as the Reds went top of the table with a classy performance
  • Liverpool’s quadruple hopes remain alive after the win, as Jurgen Klopp’s side are also in the FA Cup final and are fighting for the Champions League
  • For Manchester United, they gave incoming manager Erik Ten Hag a glimpse of the task at hand in rebuilding the club

Liverpool stormed to the top of the Premier League thanks to a comprehensive performance against a desperate Manchester United on Tuesday, April 19.

Mohammed Salah scored twice as the Reds thrashed their opponents 4-0 at Anfield in a game where United were lucky not to have conceded any more.

Despite the derby nature of the fixture, there was an embarrassing gulf in quality in the two teams as Liverpool showed their title credentials from early on, finding the back of the net as early as the fifth minute through their new man Luis Diaz.

Notably, United were without Cristiano Ronaldo, who was inevitably given compassionate leave following the death of his newborn son.

In the absence of their talisman, United showed signs of lethargy and lack of ambition, while Liverpool was the complete opposite, showing flair and winning intent from the start.

Diaz’s goal was a prelude of what was to come as the Colombian was the finisher from a Mo Salah pass following a brilliant passage of play by Liverpool.

Home fans were yet to see the best of Liverpool as they found another goal in typically classy fashion, this time Salah finding the back of the net following some intricate passing of the ball from Liverpool.

It was Mane who played the killer pass to Salah for the goal as he flicked the ball past a helpless United defence who knew little about what had just happened.

From then, Liverpool were on cruise control, and after halftime, Mane ended the game as a contest with a neat finish from Diaz’s pass, as the trio continued to wreak havoc in the United defence.

Salah then completed his brace with five minutes to go, with United all but depleted after the fourth goal.

Ironically, for all of Liverpool’s brilliance that scoreline was a bit lenient compared to the 5-0 win they registered in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford in October.

Rangnick hints at squad overhaul

Meanwhile, Ralf Rangnick says Manchester United might need to recruit up to 10 new players from next season.

The interim boss was the first to admit the 4-0 defeat to Liverpool was embarrassing and “humiliating” .

"It's embarrassing, it's disappointing, maybe even humiliating," Rangnick said as quoted by BBC.
