  • Luke Shaw has started a total of 19 games in the Premier League this season
  • He has been hampered by hamstring injuries that has kept him out of the squad for several games this campaign
  • The England left-back is set to miss the remainder of the season after having two screws on his leg removed

Luke Shaw’s season is all but over as the Manchester United left-back recently underwent an operation last week.

Shaw is said to have undergone a procedure to remove two screws in his leg after complaining of discomfort.

The screws were inserted in 2015, when the left-back suffered a horrific leg break while representing Manchester United against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League.

According to The Sun, the screws have been causing Shaw massive discomfort in recent weeks, and he has opted to have them removed.

The issue initially began during the recent international break, and the pain only got worse during Manchester United’s 1-1 draw against Leicester City on Saturday, April 2.

United’s interim boss Ralf Rangnick confirmed the issue last week, saying:

"We had to take him off at half-time and he is having problems with his leg where he had the operation back in 2015.
"The doctor told me they have decided to remove the metal bolts in his leg - they need to be removed - and that is happening and he will be out for the next two or three weeks."

Shaw was initially expected to make a speedy recovery and be back on the pitch in time for United’s remaining games as the Red Devils continue to battle for an unlikely top-four spot.

But as per reports in England, the operation is taking longer to recover from than initially expected.

United have seven more games of the season to go and Luke Shaw is set to miss all of them.

This season, Shaw has been in and out of the squad as he has been struggling with hamstring issues.

In total, he has started just 19 games all season, meaning he has played almost half the campaign.

Man United appoints consultants

Meanwhile, Manchester United have appointed the architects behind the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to draw up plans for a redevelopment of their aging Old Trafford ground.

Architects Populous and management consultants Legends International will work jointly on plans to update Britain's biggest club stadium with the aim of increasing capacity further.

Both companies worked on the development of Tottenham's 63,000-seater stadium, which opened in 2019.
