  • A Champions League quarter-final slot will be up for grabs when the two sides clash at Old Trafford on Tuesday, March 15

Man United midfielder Bruno Fernandes is a doubt for his side's Champions League meeting with Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, March 15.

Fernandes' last appearance for the Red Devils was last weekend when he played as a false No.9 against Man City during the Manchester derby.

It has now emerged he could be unavailable when United host Atletico for the second leg of their last 16 fixture after he tested positive for Covid-19.

Ralf Rangnick speaks on Bruno Fernandes' availability ahead of Atletico clash

Speaking on Bruno's availability, United interim boss Ralf Rangnick admitted he will need to make a late call for the Champions League fixture.

"Bruno we will have to wait and see until Tuesday. This will probably be a last-minute race with him – due to Covid," Rangnick revealed.

However, the German tactician was quick to reveal there is a likelihood Luke Shaw will be available for the Atletico clash.

"Luke hopefully will be back in training Monday," he added.

What Man United need to qualify for the quarter-finals

Meanwhile, with the tie all square after the two teams settled for a 1-1 draw at the Wanda Metropolitano, a 1-0 scoreline would be more than enough for any side to progress to the last eight of the European tournament.

The Champions League represent United's only realistic chance to win a trophy at the end of the season having fallen out of the Premier League and FA Cup title races.

The Old Trafford-based side currently sit fifth on the EPL standings after 29 rounds of matches.
