Man United lines up without a striker vs Man City

However, it later emerged the 37-year-old had picked a hip injury which ruled him out of the tie.

In the absence of Ronaldo, United were left with no choice but to line up without a striker - with Bruno Fernandes playing as a false No.9.

The versatile midfielder was supported by youngster Anthony Elanga and Jadon Sancho as Marcus Rashford settled for a place on the bench.

Ralf Rangnick's charges went on to suffer a 4-1 humiliation in the hands of the league leaders, with Sancho scoring the visitors' consolation.

Cristiano Ronaldo returns to training

Ronaldo now appears to have shaken off his injury concerns after he was spotted at the Carrington Training Complex.

According to The Sun, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner was in the company of his bodyguards during the return.

His presence is expected to hand Rangnick a massive boost as his charges prepare to take on Tottenham in the Premier League.

The Red Devils will be desperate to win the tie as they battle for a place in the top four at the end of the season.
