Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has extended his comfortable lead as the most earned footballer on Instagram.

The Portuguese captain recently surpassed 400 million followers on the photo-sharing app, a record that no other athlete has reached.

Ronaldo gained more than 163 million followers over the past three months and he was earning £1.7 million per single sponsored Instagram post.

And now the Sun reports that the five-time Ballon d'Or winner has achieved another feat, through no fault of his own, by reportedly earning an astonishing £388,000 per sponsored post from fake Instagram followers.

New research conducted by livefootballtickets.com indicates that Ronaldo is the player with the highest number of fake Instagram followers, with over 90 million fake accounts among his 400 million followers.

The data used Instagram credibility tool, grin.co, to detect that the rise of bot accounts on social media accounted for Ronaldo's latest source of income.

Ronaldo already pockets £1.69million for per sponsored post and now with 92 million of his followers not being original, he will earn £388,000-per-post from the fake followers due to bot accounts.

Lionel Messi is the second player with the highest fake followers on Instagram, earing an estimated 287, 210 from fake followers per post. Third on the fake followers list is Brazilian playmaker, Neymar.
