  • Legendary Man United keeper Peter Schmeichel is convinced the club can still win the Champions League this season
  • This is despite United registering unconvincing performances this term under both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick
  • The Red Devils are scheduled to play La Liga giants Atletico Madrid in the round of 16 of the European competition

Man United legend Peter Schmeichel left his fellow CBS Sports pundits in stitches after claiming the Red Devils can win the Champions League this season.

United have been blowing hot and cold since the arrival of interim boss Ralf Rangnick who succeeded Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following the Norwegian's dismissal.

Despite the Manchester club's inconsistencies, they still managed to book a place in the knockout round of the Champions League after they topped their group which included Villarreal, Atalanta, and Young Boys.

They are scheduled to faced Atletico Madrid who have not been at their best either in the round of 16.

Peter Schmeichel makes UCL prediction

Despite United looking miles behind the likes of rivals Man City, who demolished Sporting Lisbon 5-0 on Tuesday, and Paris Saint-Germain, who outfoxed Real Madrid, Schmeichel believes his former side can still conquer Europe this term.

The legendary goalkeeper made the wild claim while appearing on CBS Sports for punditry duties.

He was responding to Micah Richards who asked:

“Peter: do you honestly believe that Man United can win the Champions League? Be honest with me now. No messing around…”

After a long pause, Schmeichel said:

“Yes!”

Schmeichel's response left his fellow pundits Richards, Jamie Carragher, and Thierry Henry in stitches with the Dane finally adding:

“What kind of a question is that?”

Meanwhile, United are scheduled to resume their Champions League campaign with a trip to Spain to face Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their last 16 fixture.

Jamie Carragher makes top-four prediction

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Jamie Carragher reckons the race for fourth place will go ‘down to the wire.'

However, he feels Arsenal have a slight advantage over their rivals as it stands, while West Ham and Tottenham do not stand a chance.

"I think it will be tough for West Ham to get in the top four," the legendary defender noted.
