Benitez was shown the door at Goodison Park on Sunday, January 16, after a string of poor results.

The Sun reports the decision was reached after Everton chiefs held an emergency meeting following the Toffees' shock loss to Norwich City.

The defeat left the Merseysiders with just one win in their last 11 matches, slipping from fourth on the log to 15th.

Supporters could not hide their displeasure with their club during their trip to Carrow Road as they openly called for the sacking of Benitez.

And with the Spaniard now departed, Everton are in the market in search of his replacement, with reports suggesting the club already has several managers in mind.

Rooney, incidentally, is among those whose names have been floated for the role, with Jamie Redknapp reckoning the former England international might be the right man for the job.

"People are talking about Wayne Rooney, the job he is doing at Derby is out of this world. The fact that he's even got them in the position to stay up, this would be the greatest escape of all time," Redknapp noted.
"Whether he's the right fit, I don't know, but these are the options they will be looking at," he added.

Despite Derby County's struggles in the Championship, Rooney has tried to steady the ship, putting him in a pole position to earn a job in the topflight.

Rooney is a former Everton player having started his professional career with them back in 2002.
