Manchester United Target Aurélien Tchouameni as Casemiro Replacement, Pushing Wilfred Ndidi Down Shortlist

Manchester United have shifted focus toward Real Madrid's Aurélien Tchouameni as their preferred defensive midfield replacement for the departing Casemiro, a move that could effectively end the club's long-running interest in Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi.

Manchester United are prioritising a move for Real Madrid midfielder Aurélien Tchouameni as they prepare to address the void that will be left by Casemiro, whose contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of the current season.

According to a report by The Telegraph, United’s recruitment team have identified the France international as their primary target and regard his defensive midfield profile and top-level experience as closely aligned with the club’s requirements.

Securing Tchouameni’s signature would represent a significant financial undertaking. Real Madrid are said to value the 24-year-old at approximately €100 million, and despite the player being under contract at the Santiago Bernabéu until 2028, reports suggest Los Blancos may be open to sanctioning a departure — particularly as the Spanish giants are believed to have their own interest in Manchester City midfielder Rodri.

Tchouameni has been a regular fixture in Carlo Ancelotti’s midfield since joining Real Madrid from AS Monaco in 2022 for a reported fee of around €80 million. He has won the UEFA Champions League and LaLiga with the club and remains a key figure in Didier Deschamps’ France setup.

The reported pursuit of Tchouameni appears to have direct consequences for Wilfred Ndidi’s prospects of moving to Manchester United. The Nigerian international, who turns 30 in December, has been a consistent name in United’s transfer discussions over several windows, with the club’s recruitment department well-documented in their admiration for the player.

Ndidi, who won the FA Cup with Leicester City, has long been considered a more financially accessible alternative — a reliable, experienced option in a position United have struggled to adequately fill since Casemiro’s decline in form. However, the club has not converted that interest into a formal move across multiple transfer cycles.

Should United successfully complete a deal for Tchouameni, Ndidi’s prospects of a move to Old Trafford would appear to diminish considerably. The 29-year-old left Leicester following the club’s relegation from the Premier League and joined Wolves, where, according to reports, Tolu Arokodare’s three goals in 27 appearances were insufficient to prevent the club from being relegated — a development that adds further uncertainty to the futures of several players at Molineux.

In the event that a deal for Tchouameni proves unworkable, United are reported to have identified alternative targets. Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton have both been closely monitored by the club’s scouting operation as part of a broader search for Casemiro’s long-term successor.

Casemiro joined Manchester United from Real Madrid in August 2022 in a deal worth up to €70 million. He was influential in the club’s 2023 League Cup triumph and played a role in that season’s FA Cup final appearance, but his performances declined markedly in subsequent campaigns. His exit at the end of the 2025-26 season will bring to a close a three-year spell at the club.

United’s summer transfer activity will be closely scrutinised as the club continues its rebuild under current management. The midfield position remains one of the most pressing areas of need, and whether the club can meet Real Madrid’s reported valuation for Tchouameni is likely to be one of the defining transfer storylines of the upcoming window.
