Manchester United manager Michael Carrick faces a near-impossible defensive selection challenge ahead of his side’s Premier League meeting with Chelsea on Saturday, with the club reportedly without four of their five senior centre-backs for the trip to London.
According to reports citing Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst, Leny Yoro has sustained a training injury and did not travel with the United squad to the capital. The 19-year-old French defender had been expected to form part of United’s makeshift central defensive pairing following an already mounting injury and suspension crisis at the back.
Yoro’s absence leaves Ayden Heaven as the only fit senior centre-back available to Carrick for the Chelsea fixture. The French youngster had made 29 Premier League appearances this season prior to his injury, contributing to three clean sheets across that run.
Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez are both ruled out through suspension. Maguire had already missed United’s 2-1 midweek defeat to Leeds United after receiving a red card in the previous fixture against Bournemouth. The Football Association subsequently rejected his appeal and extended his ban by an additional game, ruling him out of the Chelsea clash as well.
Martinez’s suspension stems from the Leeds defeat itself, where the Argentine was dismissed for violent conduct after being adjudged to have pulled Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair during an aerial duel. The dismissal left United further exposed at the back and contributed to what proved to be a damaging loss in their bid to secure a top-four finish.
With Carrick now operating with a threadbare defensive unit, the United squad travelling to London includes midfielders and academy products to provide cover. Kobbie Mainoo made the trip after missing the Leeds game with a minor training injury, while youngsters Shea Lacey and Tyler Fletcher were also named in the travelling party, suggesting Carrick may be forced to field inexperienced options alongside Heaven in central defence.
The timing of the crisis is particularly significant given Chelsea and United are both understood to be competing for Champions League qualification places, adding considerable weight to what is already a high-stakes fixture. United will be looking to bounce back from the Leeds defeat, which compounded pressure on the club following what has been a difficult run of results.
The match at Stamford Bridge represents a critical juncture in United’s season, and how Carrick navigates his defensive options with such limited resources available will be one of the key talking points heading into the weekend.
